Edition 24: What if your production line could talk?

That is the big question our innovations director, Yanesh Naidoo, attempts to answer as he dives into some of the possibilities for modern manufacturing. In this article, he shares not just hypothetical, science-fiction scenarios but real solutions and actual use cases that are starting to change the way that production facilities operate in the age of AI.

For those of us who remember the 1980s, you might recall being glued to the TV screen for the weekly episode of Knight Rider, as David Hasselhoff fought crime behind the wheel of his trusty Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, K.I.T.T. The futuristic, highly modified car could talk, analyse its physical environment and activate whatever driving mode was required to deal with the situation – and beat the bad guys.

Now, for those who’ve only seen the nostalgia-filled reels on social media, the car may look a bit silly, boxy and outdated, but the principle of human-machine interaction to solve challenges has become our present-day reality.

Manufacturing technologies are evolving – from efficiency solutions like step-by-step operator guidance and computer vision cameras, which monitor and guide tools to prevent errors, to AI models that analyse quality data and recommend solutions in real time.

Enter the AI manufacturing agent

The road map to the future will include autonomous manufacturing agents – digital copilots that continuously monitor production data and provide real-time support to various human roles. From a quality agent assisting the quality manager to a production agent guiding line performance, and a people agent focusing on operator well-being and improvement, these AI agents will transform how decisions are made on the shop floor.

Consider, for example, a factory where a young engineer is faced with a quality problem on a production line. He might not have the relevant data and experience to make an independent call. So, instead of guessing, he asks a dedicated quality agent for guidance. And the production line answers. Not a person. Not a supervisor. The line itself. His very own K.I.T.T.

So, when the engineer speaks to the agent and asks for a quick assessment of the current quality on the line, the AI agent assesses the database and does a quick analysis, writing its own code to run the quality scan.

It then comes back with a verbal summary for the young engineer, telling him if there’s a critical process alert and the exact station and operation where the failure point is. More than this, it could give guidance and recommendations on how to solve the problem.

The data speaks for itself

AI-supported operations are a great starting point for improving productivity, efficiency and accuracy, but the thinking phase is where artificial intelligence is set to become truly useful. But it all depends on a foundation of reliable, real-time data.

For Jendamark’s assembly line customers, it all starts with our ODIN Workstation assembly line operating system. ODIN Workstation acts as the nervous system of the production line, where we gather all the performance data from every machine, sensor and operator. This is the data that AI agents will scan for issues and assist humans in their own language.

And this is where it gets really interesting and beneficial for global manufacturers with operations in several countries worldwide. While the people in your plants don’t all speak the same language – the data should. Being able to remove the friction that language barriers create is another powerful use case for AI agents.

Say, for instance, your international headquarters is in Germany, but production happens in Saudi Arabia or the USA. Any member of your team engaging with an AI production agent could ask for a live production update in their own language. The agent uses the exact same underlying factory data to synthesise their answer and respond directly in the appropriate language, without adding translation layers or manual interpretation. Just the right information, in the right language, instantly.

This is the plot twist: You don’t need to be a secret agent with a cool, AI-driven car to fix the world’s problems. You just need an AI agent on your production line.
